I wrote this poem as a tribute to the creative cooks and wonderful women in my family who made Christmas so magical for me as a child.

There is a kind little lady, I’d like for you to meet.
She smells like cookies and candy so sweet.
She gives away chocolate and peppermint too, for all the good things that children do.
She lives up north in a village of love where the snow-capped mountains can be seen above.

She is married to a jolly old elf, who likes her cooking, in spite of himself.
She bakes and stirs and stops to pause, have you guessed her name? It is Mrs. Claus.
She makes cupcakes with icing as white as snow and bakes fresh cookies from sugary dough.

Mrs. Claus wears velvet; her color is red, with a fur-capped bonnet upon her head.
Her lips are pink. Her cheeks are rosy. She makes the North Pole all warm and cozy.
She rolls out dough for fruit filled pies, blueberry, strawberry, and chocolate surprise.
Mrs. Claus even makes peppermint swirls for all the good little boys and girls.

Her oven is warm, and so is her heart. Do you know her? Where do I start?
She is like my teacher and the cafeteria lady. She is like my mommy holding our baby. Mrs. Claus is like every woman I’ve ever met from the doctor to the lawyer, and even the vet.

Her hair is silver with soft pretty curls that gather around her face like snow-white pearls.
Mrs. Claus is my sister, my mother, my love…my grandma, my aunt, my neighbor above.
She bakes cookies with sprinkles in her nice warm oven. She is the lady I’ll always be loving.
So now boys and girls, you’ve learned the reason, ladies today, bake for the season.

The Christmas after my husband died, his family gave me a gift certificate to one of my favorite stores, Seagrove Pottery in Cameron Village. We all share a love for pottery, and I only buy NC potters' works. I purchased a set of buttery yellow soup bowls, and every time I use them I remember the thoughtfulness of the gift and the givers.
