Rites, rituals and women’s roles as healers are the subjects of La Sombra y El Espíritu: Womens’ Healing Rituals in the Diaspora featuring works by Atlanta-based photographer Lucia Mendez and Dominican painter Wendy Phillips. They are on display through Friday, April 30, at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
An opening reception at the center’s Robert and Sallie Brown Gallery and Museum Thursday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. will feature an artist talk by Phillips and a special presentation by Arturo Lindsay, professor of art at Spelman College.
The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. and closed on university holidays. A free cell phone audio tour/guide will be available during the exhibition.
