General Artist Opportunities

University of North Carolina, Greensboro
The North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center at UNC Greensboro will host the Southern Entrepreneurship in the Arts Conference Saturday, March 26. Artists will learn how to turn artistic passion into a living. This artist-led conference will present entrepreneurial strategies and resources for student artists and emerging artists to become self-supporting. The conference will feature numerous speakers in three breakout sessions: literary, performing and visual Arts.

Performing Arts

South Arts, Atlanta, Ga.
Performing artists are invited to apply for the juried showcase in South Arts’ Performing Arts Exchange to be held Thursday, Sept. 22, and Friday, Sept. 23, at Manship Theatre in Baton Rouge, La. A total of 18 performers from all genres of the performing arts will be offered the opportunity to perform an excerpt of their work for presenters from across the East and Gulf coasts.

Literary Arts

Burlington Writers Club, Burlington
Adult writers living in Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Guilford, Orange, Randolph and Rockingham counties are eligible to enter the 2011 adult writing contest for prose and poetry. Manuscripts, including poetry, must be the original, unpublished work of the contestant and must not have received a first place award in any competition. Writers may submit one entry in each category. Reading fee applies.

Writer’s Ink Guild, Fayetteville

Lee Street Theatre, Salisbury
Lee Street Theatre is now accepting original scripts from N.C. playwrights for its annual 10-minute festival in June 2011. This year’s festival, entitled Route 66, will produce six comedies about travel.

Press 53, Winston-Salem

Press 53 announces the 2011 Open Awards. Writers may enter work in six categories: poetry, flash fiction, short-short Story, short story, creative nonfiction and novella. Prizes include a personal etched-glass award, publication in the 2011 Press 53 Open Awards Anthology, two complimentary copies of the 2011 Press 53 Awards Anthology, and a winner’s discount on unlimited additional copies to sell on his or her website and at readings.

The Poetry Council of North Carolina
The Poetry Council of North Carolina announces its annual poetry contest and The Oscar Arnold Young Contest for the Book for the best book of poetry by a N.C. author published in the previous year. Eligible books must have a 2010 copyright date and at least 20 pages of poetry written by a N.C. resident living in the state or temporarily out of state, or former residents who still identify with N.C.

Visual Arts

N.C. Japan Center, Raleigh
The N.C. Japan Center is seeking artists and designers interested in exhibiting artwork in its newly renovated facility in Raleigh. Artwork may include but is not limited to painting, printmaking, photography, fibers, calligraphy, graphic design and relief sculpture. The only guideline is that the work should have a connection to Japan, such as subject matter, imagery, processes or artist’s nationality.

The Artisan Commerce Initiative, High Point
The Artisan Commerce Initiative is seeking makers of fine furniture, sculpture, pottery, wall art and other artwork for sale to interior design and luxury market gift buyers. Registration fee applies. Artists must submit three representational digital photos for review prior to registration.

Local Color Gallery, Raleigh
Local Color Gallery, located on Glenwood South in Raleigh, is looking for new members that are creative and ready to become an active member of an artist co-op.

Agora Gallery, New York, N.Y.
Agora Gallery is now accepting entries for the 26th annual Chelsea International Fine Art Competition. The juried exhibition will be held Friday, Aug. 19, through Friday, Sept. 9. The available prizes are valued at a total of $38,000 and include cash prizes, online promotion, and participation in an exhibition in a gallery in the center of Chelsea, the New York art district. Bradenton Downtown Development Authority, Fla.
The Bradenton Downtown Development Authority Public Art Advisory Board has issued a RFQ for a lead artist to create an exterior mural on a neighborhood police substation. The artist will design the community process to involve residents in the project and complete the final design and fabrication based on the community input. Professional artists from Florida and southeastern U.S. with experience working with community engagement are invited to apply. The project budget is $25,000.

Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Tough Art Artist Residency Program sponsored by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is currently accepting applications for the summer of 2011. Artists will create an entirely new piece to be incorporated into the museum with direct impact on the visitor experience.

Stanly Arts Guild, Albemarle
The Stanly Arts Guild and Falling Rivers Gallery will host the 2011 Ellen Cook Gaskin Memorial Art Show entitled Nature At Its Best Tuesday, March 22, through Saturday, April 16. Cash prizes totaling $1,200 will be awarded, and winners will be announced at an artists’ reception Saturday, April 16. Entry fee applies.

Fayetteville Art Guild
Fayetteville Art Guild has issued a call for art for their spring juried exhibition Spring Fantasy Friday, March 25, through Saturday, April 16 at Gallery ONE13. Original two- and three-dimensional artwork in all mediums accepted with a maximum size of 48” x 48”. Cash prizes will be awarded. Entry fee applies.

East Carolina University, Greenville
The seventh annual East Carolina University Youth Arts Festival will be held Saturday, April 2, on the campus of East Carolina University from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Artists are invited to be a part of this event to sell their wares and engage children and families in their artistic process.

Poetry Paths, Lancaster, Pa.
Poetry Paths seeks qualifications from artists and designers interested in creating pieces of art to be permanently displayed throughout Lancaster, Pa. Each piece will incorporate selected poetry. Completed pieces may include sculpture, pavement inserts, fencing, street furniture, murals and interactive pieces that will be installed in neighborhoods from March through October 2011. The total budget for each site is $10,000. The call is open to professional artists, architects, landscape architects or design teams capable of designing the piece and also arranging for fabrication and installation. There is no Pennsylvania residency requirement.

The Light Factory, Charlotte
The Light Factory is seeking challenging and inventive new work from photographers and artists throughout the country for its fourth annual juried exhibition Annuale Tuesday, May 31, through Sunday, Sept. 24. The work can include both traditional and non-traditional approaches to photographic imaging. Entry fee applies.

Light Space & Time Gallery, Jupiter, Fla.
Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery presents its juried competition open to all two-dimensional artists. Submissions based on the theme “Botanicals” will be accepted for inclusion into the April 2011 online group exhibition. Five finalists will be selected to appear in the exhibition, and awards for first, second and third places will be given.

City of  Gainesville, Fla.
The City of Gainesville invites artists or artist teams to submit applications to create public artwork for the Gainesville Regional Utilities’ Eastside Operations Center. The design should provide a link between the public artwork and the functions of the operations center. There are several possible sites (interior and exterior) for artwork. Project budget is $80,000 and is open to all artists over 18 residing in the U.S. Artist teams are eligible to apply, including teams of artists from multiple disciplines.

Direct Art Magazine, Hudson, N.Y.
Direct Art Magazine announces its annual Volume 18 international competition. The competition is open to all visual artists working in any media. Artist winners of the competition will have their work appear in Volume 18 of Direct Art Magazine. Awards totaling $26,000 include the magazine covers, feature articles and full-page displays. Entry fee applies.

Appalachian Center for Craft, Cookeville, Tenn.
Year-long artist residencies are available at the Appalachian Center for Craft. Areas include clay, fibers, glass, wood and exhibitions. Applicants must hold a minimum of a B.F.A. degree; M.F.A. or equivalent professional experience preferred. An annual stipend is provided.

International Society of Acrylic Painters, Santa Cruz, Calif.
The International Society of Acrylic Artist’s will hold its 14th annual open acrylic international juried exhibition in Santa Cruz, Calif., Friday, July 1, through Sunday, July 31. Cash and merchandise awards will be given.

The Arts Guild of Old Forge, N.Y.
The Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors is a competitive exhibition open to all living artists 18 and older working with water media on paper. Viridian Artists, New York, N.Y.
Viridian Artists, a contemporary art gallery, announces its 22nd international juried competition. The competition is open to all U.S. and international artists working in two- and three-dimensional media. Cash prizes will be awarded. Twenty-five finalists’ work will be displayed in a group exhibition at Viridian Tuesday, June 28, through Saturday, July 16. Purdue University Gallery is seeking works that explore conceptual and theoretical issues, push the boundaries of drawing practice and engage in critical dialogue for the exhibition Drawing Resurfaced. McColl Center for Visual Art, Charlotte
McColl Center for Visual Art invites artists to apply for the Environmental Artist-in-Residence program. The artists in residence will have access to urban sites, such as creeks, parks and streetscapes where they can interact with the environment and make remedial interventions. Residency periods are from several weeks to three months. This opportunity is open to established and emerging artists and other design professionals.

Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Rochester, N.Y.
Rochester Contemporary Arts Center presents 6×6x2011: Global, the fourth exhibition of thousands of original artworks, Saturday, June 4, through Sunday, July 10. The first 5,000 artworks received will be included in the exhibition. Each artwork will be 6 x 6 square inches and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously. All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Three cash prizes will be awarded by popular vote.

The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum, Mackinaw City, Mich.
Professional and amateur artists and photographers are invited to submit work to a juried exhibition contest at The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum. Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, Philadelphia, Pa.
Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is currently accepting proposals for its 2012 season of site-specific artist installations. Maximum funding is $7,500 per project. It is recommended that artists begin the proposal process by attending an artist orientation. These informal tours/conversations give the artists a chance to experience the space, discuss what makes a successful proposal, ask questions and observe visitors interacting with the current artist installations.
