Asheville’s Warren Wilson College got a shout-out on the April 5 edition of The Colbert Report as the result of an appearance by guest James Franco, the recent Oscar host and best actor nominee (for 127 Hours) also known for roles in films and television shows including General Hospital, Spider Man, Milk and Nights in Rodanthe. Among his other projects, Franco is enrolled in his fifth semester as a poetry student in the college’s M.F.A. program for writers, which offers 10-day residencies each January and July.
“Many of our students find this program so enriching that they choose to prolong their study beyond the required four semesters,” says Debra Allbery, director, M.F.A. program for writers. “In fact, more than half of our students elect to take at least one ‘extra’ semester, which is subject to the same rigorous creative and critical writing requirements as those semesters which advance a student toward the degree.” Read an interview with Franco on the Poetry Foundation website at http://www.poetryfoundation.org/journal/article.html?id=241370.
