Target is known more for being red than being read. But its recent mailing of “Haiku-Pons” (Poetry and Savings in One!) deserves a nod for creativity—placing lines of poetry on its product coupons for everything from toilet tissue to dog biscuits. Their booklet features three perforated coupons on each page, with a line of poetry on each coupon. As coupons are removed, a new poem is formed in a variety of combinations:
fresh breath on a brush/ is a cozy, happy joy/ sit, shake and roll over.
a soft, cushy roll/ cheeks want a colorful boost/ make your momma proud
beware, pesky grime/ slice of swiss should do the trick/ sweet squares of heaven
An unforeseen problem—the coupons are so much fun you might not want to use them.
We invite you to compose your own haikus about everyday household items and submit them here. Remember that a haiku is a three-line poem with five, seven and five syllables. We’ll post some of our best entries at a future date.
