The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum in Sedalia will be presented with a portrait of its namesake during its annual Christmas open house on Sunday, Dec. 11. Originally commissioned by the Charlotte Observer for use in an African American history supplement, the color portrait by Charlotte artist Jason Whitley depicts Brown, the founder of the nationally renowned Palmer Institute in 1902 as a preparatory school for African-American youth. She served as the school’s president for 50 years.
A State Historic Site since 1987, the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum welcomes visitors to this free, family-friendly open house from 1–5 p.m., featuring children’s crafts, Christmas music, refreshments and a holiday visit from Santa.
