The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.

The Arts Council does not endorse or recommend any specific opportunities, but provides this list for information only. We encourage artists to research each opportunity thoroughly before applying.

General Artist Opportunities

City of Raleigh
The City of Raleigh Arts Commission is accepting nominations for the 2012 Medal of Arts awards, the city’s highest arts honor. Nominations should describe lifetime extraordinary artistic achievement or support of the arts by an individual or group.

Literary Arts

Inch Magazine, Durham
Inch Magazine, published by Bull City Press, is a quarterly publication devoted to tiny poems (one to nine lines) and tiny fiction (less than 750 words). Submissions by established and emerging writers are being accepted for consideration.

Winston-Salem Writers, Winston-Salem
Submissions are being accepted for the 2012 anthology contest. Writers may enter in four categories: poetry, flash fiction, short story and memoir/essay/creative nonfiction. First, second and third place winners will be chosen in each category, and all will be published in the upcoming anthology. Entry fee applies.

Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va.
Shenandoah: The Washington and Lee Review is accepting submissions for the Bevel Summers Prize for the Short Short Story. Writers may submit up to three entries of 1,000 words or less. Winning entry will receive $500 and publication in Shenandoah. All entries will be considered for publication.

Riley Children’s Foundation, Indianapolis, Ind.
Poems are being accepted for the Words for Riley poetry contest. Cash prize and display of poem in the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home will be awarded to one winner. Entry fee benefits Riley Children’s Foundation.

North Carolina Poetry Society
The Brockman-Campbell Book Award is open to a book-length (20 or more pages of poetry) volume of poetry published in 2011. Entrants must be native-born North Carolinians or current residents who have lived in the state for at least three years at the time of the book’s publication. Winning poet will receive $200 and an invitation to read at the N.C. Poetry Society’s fall meeting. Entry fee applies for non-members.

Southern Writers Magazine
Southern Writers Magazine will publish a bonus issue of Southern short stories in summer 2012. Any family-friendly subject is welcome; the story must take place in a Southern setting or feature a character from the South. Manuscripts must be no more than 1,000 words. Publication and cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place, and 10 runners-up will also be published in the bonus issue. Entry fee applies.

Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition, Key West, Fla.

Prime Mincer Press
Prime Mincer Press is seeking submissions of short fiction for an anthology titled The Man Date: 15 Bromances, to be published in early 2013. Eligible entries include original, unpublished short stories ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 words concerning bromances — work that in some way comments on or deals with male friendships and relationships, and/or plays on the idea of the buddy story. Awards include contributor copies and percentage of royalties.

Arts Council of Carteret County, Morehead City
The Arts Council of Carteret County is accepting applications for the third annual ARTrageous Art Event on the waterfront in Morehead City Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20.  ARTrageous is a juried event and is held in collaboration with the Crystal Coast Boat Show. Jury fee and booth fee apply.

Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority, Philadelphia, Pa.
The Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority’s Percent for Art Program seeks images of recent work from artists who wish to be considered to create an original permanent work of public art at a new development at Broad and South Streets in Philadelphia. This opportunity is open to all artists regardless of their geographic location. Project budget is $350,000.

Appalachian State University, Boone
Entries are being accepted for the 26th annual Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition. Ten finalists will be selected for installation on the campus of Appalachian State University. All finalists whose works are installed on campus will receive a $500 honorarium. Three artists will receive additional cash awards for first, second and third place.

The City of Germantown, Tenn.
The City of Germantown seeks artwork for its first annual Sculpture Promenade Project, October 2012 through August 2013. Three-dimensional, free-standing sculptures of any media suitable for long-term installation in outdoor public spaces are sought for six sites. One interior work of art is sought that is suitable for suspension from the ceiling of the City Hall public area. Open to all professional artists over the age of 18 living in the U.S. Each artist selected for the project will receive a $1,000 stipend per sculpture. Artists can make works available for purchase at the end of the exhibition.

City of Albuquerque, N.M.
The Albuquerque Arts Board seeks to commission a work of art that is complimentary with the contemporary design of Fire Station #2. Project budget is $54,500 and is open to all artists/artist teams residing in the U.S.

Cary Visual Art, Cary
Visual artists are invited to submit their work to be exhibited and featured at the Cary Arts Center in celebration of the Cary Cross Currents Chamber Music Arts Festival. The Quartet art show will open Saturday, Aug. 4. Artists work should respond to the concept of “quartet,” celebrating all things in fours.

Piedmont Craftsmen, Winston-Salem
Piedmont Craftsmen’s exhibiting membership is open to craft artists living in the U.S. The primary criteria for membership are quality in design, technical skill and originality. The year-long membership application process has two stages: the Image Jury and the Object Jury. Applicants in the second stage of the jury process may take part in Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair in November.

Toe River Arts Council, Burnsville
Artists are invited to participate in the sixth annual TRAC Paint-Out Saturday, May 19. Artists will register the day of the paint-out and choose their own location to capture Burnsville through any painting or drawing medium. A total of $1,000 will be awarded at the end of the event. Entry fee applies.
