Celebrating vitality and local partnerships that make main streets a focal point for community life, the N.C. chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NC) recently announced the 2012 Great Places in North Carolina. All of the main streets recognized are walkable, interesting, and alive. They are places where residents and visitors come together for special events, and also central gathering places in the everyday life of their community. Places across the country that are of exemplary character, quality and planning often incorporate public art and cultural events in their planning.
The APA-NC 2012 Great Places in North Carolina include:
In the Mountains: Asheville’s Lexington Avenue.
In the Piedmont: Charlotte’s Tryon Street and Hillsborough’s Churton Street.
In the Coastal Plain: Edenton’s Broad Street.
Great Place in the Making: Gastonia’s Main Avenue.
People’s Choice: Mount Airy’s Main Street.
People’s Choice Runner-up: Southport’s Howe and Moore Streets.
