There’s still time to catch the world premiere of Radiunt Abundunt by artistic director Preston Lane, with original music by Laurelyn Dossett at Triad Stage in Greensboro. This contemporary North Carolina drama runs through Sunday, March 13 with shows at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The production features a cast of six, all women, and weaves music, story, and folk art prompting the audience to ask questions about the definition of art and even how you define an “artist.”
The show focuses on an art collector and a visionary artist, Mother Radiunce.
The topic of outside art is familiar to North Carolina, which celebrates a long tradition of visionary and outsider artists from whirligigs created by the late Vollis Simpson of Lucama, Clyde Jones, a Bynum, N.C. whose chainsaw “Critter” carvings are popular among folk art lovers and the paintings of the late Rev. McKendree Robbins Long, the “Picture Painter of the Apocalypse.”
The show is an exploration of art, family and love. Two women are searching for a missing family member. An art collector discovers a new visionary artist. A desperate young woman seeks to build a home in the most unlikely place. And an artist with a secret past struggles to preach her faith with shape and color.
“This is a continuation of the work Laurelyn and I have been creating for Triad audiences for a decade now,” said Preston Lane. “But it is also a real departure as we seek to radically reimagine the intersection of music, theater and the stories of our region. This is our first contemporary story and it is both the story of family divided but also an exploration of what drives creativity.”
Laurelyn Dossett is a Grammy award winning musician and a recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship, and has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
