Gaston Arts County, the Gaston County Public Library, Gaston County Schools and the Friends of the Gaston County Public Library have joined together to create Gaston Story Spin, a free storytelling experiences for all ages, that kicks-off Saturday, Nov. 19 and continues through spring 2017.
Gaston Story Spin brings together great stories with great storytellers in venues throughout Gaston County and features ways for participants to be a part of the storytelling, using activities ranging from drawing to interactive dialogue. The goal of the program is to promote literacy within the county and to expose people of all ages to the artistry of storytelling.
The kickoff event starts at 2 p.m. at the Main Library, located at 1555 East Garrison Blvd. in Gastonia.
Each Gaston Story Spin session will feature several storytellers followed by an interactive audience activity related to the stories that were shared. Pictures, videos and written works created from the activities will be posted on a blog dedicated to the Gaston Story Spin experience.
The interactive activities and audience involvement will provide an opportunity for the stories to act as a catalyst for participants to use their imagination and to promote conversations. For school-age participants, the interactive activities are another way to bolster their listening comprehension skills and improve their comfort level in sharing/discussing stories they read or hear, whether informally or in a classroom setting.
In order to reach all corners of the county, spins will be held at all branches of the Gaston County Public Libraries, and each will feature a historical tie to the community in which it is being held.
Here is the complete schedule of spins is as follows:
