Two North Carolina towns made the “America’s Top 10 Towns for Craft Lovers 2017″ list of favorite places to enjoy a vibrant craft scene, selected through a national poll conducted by American Craft Week.
Seagrove is the top vote getter, garnering over 33% of more than 17,000 votes cast. Seagrove, population 228, is considered the “Handmade Pottery Capital of the United States.” Asheville came in fifth.
The visitor experience is different in rural Seagrove than in edgy Asheville, but in both communities artisans and craftspeople are easy to find and eager to share their work.
Asheville is the headquarters of The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design which supports the understanding of craft.
“Congratulations to Seagrove,” said American Craft Week co-chair, Diane Sulg. “The potters there did a tremendous job publicizing the contest and urging folks to vote for them. Even more impressive, the town was not on the initial ballot, but after an early number of write-in votes, they were added to the ballot and their tally just kept growing.”
